Women's Volleyball Falters Against Hartford

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's volleyball team was unable to surpass the University of Hartford Hawks in the opener of the URI Invitational on Friday.

The Basics
Score: Hartford 3, Merrimack 0 (27-15 | 25-10 | 25-13)
Records: Merrimack (0-9) | Hartford (2-5)

Set Breakdown:
  • Quinn Kellogg got the Warriors off to a strong start for the first set with two aces as Merrimack jumped to a 7-1 lead in the set. A set of gaffes by Hartford continued Merrimack on a five-point run to take a 16-6 set lead, added onto by kills from Brooke Leestma and Sydney Green. A pair of aces from Emily Brouder and Leestma. Hartford went on a late run to draw the match even. At 25 all, the Hawks notched its two points for the finish.
  • In the second, teams traded points in the open. Kills by Maalese Wallace and Maegan Hladick as an Ashley Gajdzik kill brought the set even at eight. The Hawks gained a five-point rally to gain an advantage, before the Warriors made a four-point punch to keep the set alive before Hartford finished to take the second.
  • Hartford set the tone early in the third set, taking an early lead. Merrimack chipped away with four kills to continue the fight. The Hawks closed out the third to take the game.
Notes & Notables
  • Ashley Gajdzik finished first on the night with a team-best 12 assists and 10 digs.
  • Brooke Leestma took team tops with seven kills, three aces and seven assists.

Merrimack will finish at the URI Invitational on Saturday, with the day's first match against Rider at 1 p.m. and against the host Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
