NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. — On a night that the Merrimack women's soccer team honored its seven seniors, the Warriors were able to pull out a hard-fought 2-1 double overtime victory over rival Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday night.

The Basics
Score: Merrimack Warriors 2
, Fairleigh Dickinson 1 (2 OT)
Records: Merrimack (2-6-2, 2-1-0 NEC) | FDU (5-5-2, 2-2-0 NEC)
Location: Martone-Mejail Field | North Andover, Mass.

The Summary
  • The Warriors defense was sharp from the start, with Michele Silva making seven saves, as the defensive positioning blocked a flurry of shot attempts as the Knights jumped for 17 attempts in the half. FDU got one on the board in the 32' to take a lead into half time.
  • Merrimack came out of half time firing on all cylinders and went on the attack early. About ten minutes into the second half the Warriors struck when Vanessa Wainwright peeled a ball off a stalled defender, sending a crisp pass to the middle. The pass cut through a Warrior to meet the boot of freshman Ella Cormier found the back of the net for her third this season.
  • Merrimack continued to press the issue in the second half with 11 shot attempts and four shots on target, while holding Fairleigh Dickinson to just one shot on goal. This game could not be decided in 90 minutes and would need not one but two overtime periods.
  • Wainwright's footspeed would again be lethal on a 3-on-0 break through the midfield following a corner attempt by FDU. Emma Rogorzenski brought the ball up the far side, with Molly Murnane racing down the middle with Wainwright along the near side. Murnaned corralled the pass, sending the ball to an open Wainwright. From ten yards out, Wainwright fired a hard rising shot to take the win for the Warriors.
