Amherst, Mass.- The Merrimack Men's Hockey team was able to comeback from two one goal deficits including scoring midway through the third period but fell early in overtime by a score of 3-2 on Friday night at the Mullins Center.
The Basics
Score: UMass Amherst: 3 Merrimack: 2
Records: Merrimack (3-3-0, 1-1-0 HEA) | UMass (5-0-1, 1-0-0)
Attendance: 3,150
How it happened:
Merrimack fell behind early in the contest with the goal coming only 3:26 into the game.
Merrimack would find their answer midway through the second period when Trevor Griebel scored his first as a Warrior on a shot that was deflected by an opposing defender, the assists went Mac Welsher and Tristan Crozier.
UMass would re-take the lead on the powerplay, at 6:35 of the third period, but they wouldn't stay in front for very long.
Merrimack's pushing to re-tie the game got their answer in a hurry, because Alex Jefferies found the puck in the net mouth scramble only 47 seconds later, and even though the goal went to review the decision would stand, and Merrimack had their second game tying goal of the night.
With nothing solved for the first 60 minutes the game headed to overtime.
Overtime didn't go very long as UMass scored on the first shot of the period to win it at 1:42.
