Baseball Downed by Northeastern Wednesday

BROOKLINE, MASS. – The Merrimack College baseball team was beat by Northeastern University on Wednesday afternoon, 7-1. Stephen Santarpia had the lone RBI for the Warriors in the second inning after doubling to left. Ben Nelson, Michael Golankiewicz, and Tiernan Lynch also had hits for Merrimack in the loss.

Rapid Recap
  • Nelson got on first after a single with one out, but did not leave the base. Northeastern homered in their first at bats to take an early lead. In the second, Kurtis Stadnicki reached on an error then was thrown out at second on the next at bat after a fielder's choice by Scott Elliott. Elliott stole second, putting a runner in scoring position. Santarpia then doubled to left to put the Warriors on the board and tie the game at one. The Huskies took the lead back in the bottom half of the second, going up by one. Merrimack starter Cedric Gillette got out of a two runner on jam in the third to keep the Husky lead at one. Tyghe Healy entered for Gillette in the fourth and got Northeastern to go down in order. Inning five came and the Huskies added another run to take a two-score advantage.  
  • The Huskies added another run in the sixth to go up three. Peyton Heisner came in for the Warriors in the seventh and got Northeastern to go down in order. Lynch led off the eighth with a double to right putting a runner in scoring position for the first time in five innings. The Warriors were unfortunately unable to get a rally started in the eighth.

  • Lynch is now 3-3 on the season. All three hits have come in the last two games.
  • As a team the Warriors had a perfect fielding percentage in the defeat.

Merrimack heads down to New York to play Hofstra for two and Manhattan for one starting on Friday afternoon. Game one is set to start at 2 p.m.
