Warriors Celebrate Seniors and Upset Win over Wagner

NORTH ANDOVER, M.A. – The women's lacrosse team celebrated their Seniors in a pre-game ceremony, and were able to continue that celebration as they came away with a huge upset win over fellow conference member, Wagner College. Freshman goalkeeper, Hayley Kowalczyk, had an incredible performance in between the pipes, with a .650 save percentage.

The Basics:
Score: Merrimack 10, Wagner 7
Records: Merrimack 4-9, 4-1, Wagner 5-9, 3-2 NEC

How it happened:

1st quarter:
  • Wagner's offense got to a hot start, scoring three goals out of the gate
  • Catherine Mahanna got things going for her team, scoring on a pass from Olivia Valdes
  • Wagner would score once more before the end of the quarter
  • Score at end of 1st: 4-1 Wagner
2nd quarter:
  • Just like Wagner did in the previous quarter, the Merrimack offense came out strong
  • The Warriors would tally five un-answered goals at the hands of three different scorers.
  • Meghan Dzialo would post two in a row, which would tie the game and then give the Warriors their first lead of the game
  • Score at end of 2nd: 5-4 Merrimack
3rd quarter:
  • The Warriors came into the second half with the same offensive momentum. Dzialo and Sophie Scearbo would score back-to-back to give their team a three-goal cushion.
  • The Seahawks drought would eventually end, as they are able to score on a free position.
  • But, the Merrimack offense wasn't satisfied. Dzialo would add one more before clock expired.
  • Score at end of 3rd: 8-5 Merrimack
4th quarter:
  • Lulu Sweeney and Mahanna would each add one to their team's total to give the Warriors a comfortable lead.
  • A foul on goalie, Hayley Kowaczyk, would give Wagner an empty-net free position opportunity, on which they would score.
  • The Seahawks would add one more with just about 20 seconds remaining in regulation, but it was not enough to overcome the lead that the Warriors had built.

Final Score: 10-7 Merrimack
