Women's Volleyball Drops Two in West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, WV. – The Merrimack College women's volleyball team lost both its matches on Thursday afternoon down in West Virginia. The first match was against the host school West Virginia University and the second was a match up against Delaware State.

  • An Avery Brown kill gave the Warriors a one-point lead early on. Lauryn Mattiucci had a service ace to tie the set at seven. The Mountaineers when went up 15-8. Julz Carlat had a kill to put Merrimack within six. West Virginia then scored eight of the last nine points of the set to win. In the second set the Warriors found themselves down six early on. Brown had a kill late in the set, but it was not enough to give the Warriors a set victory. In the third set the Warriors jumped out to a four-point lead, highlighted by a Sydney Green kill. Cate Wright had a kill to put Merrimack up three. The Mountaineers then scored 12 straight points to flip the game and go up eight. The Warriors made it a game down the stretch, but untimely droppedthe third set.

  • Carlat had a kill to put the Warriors within two points. Maalese Wallace had a kill to stop a Delaware State run. Late in the set Wallace and Ashley Gajdzik had back-to-back kills,to cut the lead to single digits, but it was not enough to take the first set. In the second set, Annie Taylor launched a service ace to tie it up at four. After a run, the Warriors tiedthe set back at eight after a Carlat kill. Later on in the set Carlat had an ace to tie it up once again at 20. Delaware State then scored the next five points to take the second set. In the third set, Quinn Kellogg had an ace to put the Warriors down three early on. Delaware State then bounced back going up by 11. Green had a kill to put Merrimack down 10. The Warriors ended up losing the set by 10.

  • Carlat led Merrimack with 13 kills.
  • Kellogg ranked first in assists with 20 in the two matches.

The Warriors get back to action tomorrow after when they play Binghamton University. Game time is set for noon.
