Strong Second Half Propels Men’s Soccer Past St. Francis

NORTH ANDOVER MASS- Merrimack's men's soccer team picked up their first win in conference play in 2022, as two goals in the final 30 minutes was enough to defeat the Saint Francis Red Flashes on a cloudy but dry Saturday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field.

Rapid Recap

  • Despite neither team being able to find the net in the first half there were plenty of chances on both sides, Min Jun Jang attempt at the 4 minute mark was stopped in close, and then at 9:14 Carlo Romei's headed effort went just past the post.

  • Just past the hour mark, Merrimack grabbed the lead after some fantastic individual play from #11 Johan Feilscher down the left side, he picked out a wide open Juri Schlingmann, who put it past the helpless keeper to put Merrimack on top.

  • Merrimack found their second goal after a fantastic pass from Alessandro Negri, who found Feilscher who had a great run through the middle staying onside and beating the goalkeeper in the one on one situation.

  • Down two, Alvaro Rodriguez made his best save of the game right the 80th minute mark, as he stretched out to make a fantastic diving save to his right to maintain the score. 

  • With only one more shot after that Merrimack was able to control possession and the game clock and capture their first win of NEC play this season

Players of note:

  • Schlingmann scored his 4th goal of the season
  • Feilscher scored his 5th goal, his fourth in six games, and added an assist on the first goal
  • Negri assisted living on his 3rd goal of the year
  • Rodriguez made 8 saves as he picked up his fourth clean sheet of the season

The Warriors head on the road for more NEC conference play as they take on the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights next Sunday at 2 PM, Merrimack's next home game is on October 9th vs the Saint Francis Brooklyn Terriers at 1 PM.
