Late Goal Earns Tie for Women's Soccer Over Long Island

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – Daniela Almeida scored a goal with just under five minutes to play to give the Merrimack College women's soccer team a tie against Long Island University on Thursday night. The equalizer was assisted by Julia Ostermann.

  • Less than three minutes into the game, Almeida had shots on goal on back-to-back offensive possessions for the Warriors. The Sharks struck first in the 19th minute of play, giving them a one goal advantage early on in the first. In the 21st minute Ella Cormier launched a shot towards goal that was saved by the Long Island goalkeeper. The Sharks went into halftime up by one.
  • About halfway through the second half, Molly Murnane fired a shot on goal that was saved by the Long Island goalkeeper. Warrior goalkeeper Lily Morgan had a save in the 67th minute to preserve a one-goal deficit. In the 84th minute Murnane had another shot on goal that was saved. One minute later, Almeida scored, tying the game for Merrimack. The goal was the freshman's first of her Warrior career. With the momentum shifted, Cassie Avenick had a shot in the 89th minute to win the game. The shot was saved by the Long Island goalkeeper, ending the game in a tie.
