Women's Basketball Clipped By Wagner

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack College women's basketball team was defeated during Monday's matchup against Wagner College, 69-63. Jayme DeCesare led the Warriors with 18 points, Diamond Christian had a season-high with 14 points. Jada Powell had the most rebounds on the team with nine.

Rapid Recap
  • Christian started the game off with a two-point jumper to start it off for Merrimack. DeCesare and Christian both got a steal early on in the first quarter to cause a few turnovers for Wagner. Both teams traded scores until Wagner took over towards the end of the first quarter. Lydia Melaschenko hit a nice two-point jumper to cut the scoring run for Wagner. The Warriors would only be down by nine points at the end of the first quarter. Going into the second quarter, DeCesare scored a three-pointer along with Makenzie Bray which tied the lead 27-27 with five minutes left in the quarter. Both teams fought for the lead but the score would be 31-31 ending the first half.
  • Wagner started the second half with an eight-point lead. Amaya Staton broke up the lead with a jumper along with a layup towards the end of the third quarter. Going into the last quarter of the game both the Warriors and Seahawks battled back and forth, sharing the lead on multiple occasions. The Warriors would end up losing by six points.
 
Notes and Numbers
  • The Warriors had 18 points in the paint along with eight points off turnovers.
  • DeCesare went 8-8 in free throws.

Merrimack head down to Connecticut to take on Sacred Heart University for a Thursday night game on January 19th. Game time is set for 7p.m.
