Women's Basketball Suffers Setback at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Merrimack College women's basketball team dropped its second straight Northeast Conference game on Friday afternoon. Marissa Hamilton had a team-high 17 points, as well as nine rebounds. Amaya Staton was the only other Warrior in double figures with 13 points. Diamond Christian had eight points and 10 rebounds during her 33 minutes of play in the loss.

Rapid Recap
  • Staton scored the first four points of the game for Merrimack. Christian hit a three to put the Warriors up two points early on in the first quarter. Seven straight points by the Seahawks gave them a five-point advantage. Jayme DeCesare hit a jumper and Hamilton hit two free throws to cut the lead to just one. Wagner went into the second quarter up by five points. The Seahawks scored eight of the first 10 points of the second quarter to go up 11. Alana Fursman had a jumper to stop the run. Down 13, the Warriors went on a 10-0 run to end the first half, heading into halftime down three points.
  • Merrimack continued to roll offensively in the second half, scoring the first five points of the third quarter, recapturing the lead by two after a Hamilton three. Both teams battled back and forth, tying the game on multiple occasions. The Seahawks then added six points to go up two possessions. The Warriors responded by scoring three points, cutting the lead in half. Wagner scored the last seven points of the third quarter to head into the fourth up by 10. Christian opened the fourth quarter with a three, putting Merrimack down by seven. A jumper by Fursman sliced the lead down to six points with just under seven minutes to play. After a Seahawk jumper the advantage was 11 with five minutes to play. The Warriors then scored seven unanswered points to get the lead down to four points with three minutes left in the game. A jumper by Wagner made it six. Hamilton found the bottom of the net with a jumper of her own to get it back down to four. With 40 seconds to play, Hamilton hit two free throws making it a one possession game. The Warriors had two chances to tie the game in the final seconds, but could not convert.
