Men's Hockey Tripped Up in Overtime Against Lowell

Lowell, Mass. —  The Merrimack Men's Hockey team was defeated in overtime by the University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks by a score of 3-2 on Saturday night. This marks the third consecutive game between these two sides that has gone to overtime (the Warriors won in a shootout on Wednesday night and defeated the River Hawks in the Hockey East semifinal last March at the TD Garden).

The Basics

Merrimack (4-6-1, 2-4-1): 2, University of Massachusetts Lowell (5-6-1, 2-5-1): 3

With under a minute to play in the first period, Merrimack would get on the board when Alex Jefferies scored off a Matt Copponi faceoff win to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.

Lowell would tie the game in the second period, and had a chance to open the game up with a five minute major that was assessed to the Warriors. Merrimack dug and made the kill to take the game tied 1-1 into the third period.

Lowell wouldn't take long to take the lead, scoring 45 seconds into the final 20 minutes. Merrimack battled back as Liam Dennison's long shot got tipped home by Mark Hillier to tie the game at two apiece.

In overtime, Merrimack was assessed a penalty and the Riverhawks would take the win at 1:47 of the extra period.
