Last Second Shot From Staton Gives Women’s Basketball Eighth Straight Win

NEW BRITAIN, CONN. – A last second layup from Amaya Staton gave the Merrimack College women's basketball team a 62-60 win over Central Connecticut State University on Thursday night. Both Kaylee Thomas and Staton finished the game with 15 points. Staton also had eight rebounds and three blocks in the victory.

Rapid Recap
  • The Blue Devils jumped out to a quick eight-point lead. Staton scored to make the deficit six. Central Connecticut then went on a six-point run to go up by 12. A Marissa Hamilton three towards the end of the first quarter would put Merrimack down nine heading into the second. The Warriors opened the second quarter with back-to-back threes from Jayme DeCesare and Thomas. The Blue Devil lead was now just three. Merrimack would battle all the way back to tie the game at 20. Both teams would battle back and forth. Thomas would hit a three as time expired in the first half, trying the game at 29.
  • The second half opened with both team battling back and forth, tying the game on multiple occasions. The Warriors would find themselves down by five heading into the fourth quarter. A Thomas three would tie the game at 45 with eight minutes to play in the game. Lydia Melaschenko would find the bottom of the net with a three to put Merrimack up by one. The Blue Devils would then go on a run with five and a half minutes to play. With two and a half minutes left, DeCesare would hit a three to put the Warriors down by two. Thomas would then hit a three of her own to give Merrimack a late one-point lead in the fourth. After a Central Connecticut bucket, Staton would convert a three-point play to give the Warriors a two-point win.
