Baseball Swept by Coppin State in Home Opening Series

ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack College Warriors Baseball team was swept in their home opening weekend series with Coppin State University.

Game 1:
Coppin State: 16, Merrimack: 15

The Eagles added five runs in the top of the first inning. The Warriors responded with a solo home run from Frankie Ferrentino. In the second, Chris Goode singled home Braydon Dolbashian for the second run of the afternoon for Merrimack. Coppin State added two runs in the top of the third to go up 7-2. Scott Elliott stole home on a throwing error in the bottom of the third inning. Matthew Chatelle then launched a three-run home run to left field to pull the Warriors within one. Later in the third, Christian Gemelli hit a home run to tie the game at seven. The Eagles added three runs in the fourth and fifth to go back up by three. Merrimack battled back in its portion of the fifth inning. Alex Haba hit a home run to put the Warriors down two. Dolbashian then hit into a fielder's choice, scoring the runner from third. Goode launched a sac fly to right, scoring Chatelle from third. Gemelli scored from third on a wild pitch, giving Merrimack an 11-10 lead. Coppin State scored one run in the sixth and one in the eighth to go back up by one. Haba singled to right, scoring the runner from third, tying the game at 12. Michael Golankiewicz ground into a fielder's choice, scoring the runner from third and giving the Warriors back the lead. Chantelle then doubled home a run. putting Merrimack up two. Gemelli finished the Warrior scoring in the eighth with a single up the middle. Merrimack was up three heading tin the ninth. Coppin State scored four runs in the ninth to win the game.

Game 2:
Coppin State: 8, Merrimack: 0
 
Coppin State scored one run in the first to take an early lead. Elliott led off the bottom of the first with a single, he did not score. The Eagles then added five runs on three hits in the top of the second to go up by six. Chantelle singled to open up the bottom of the second. He was thrown out at third to end the inning. With two outs in the in third, Ferrentino doubled, but failed to score. In the fourth, Golankiewicz singled, reached third, but could not cross home. Hayden Bond singled with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, he also reached third, but could not score. Coppin State added two runs in the top of the seventh to go up by eight. They did not let up a run the rest of the game, winning by eight.

Game 3:
Coppin State: 4, Merrimack: 3

The Eagles scored three runs in the first and second inning to once again take an early lead. Ben Nelson drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth to add a run to the Merrimack total. Haba then singled in two runs for the Warriors, tying the game at three. Tyghe Healy threw eight solid inning, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out six. The game headed to extra innings. Coppin State scored a run in the top of the 10th to go up by one. Steven Sanataria doubled down the line with one out in the bottom of the 10th. The Warriors then went down in order, ending the game.
