Baseball Holds Off Long Island to Even Series

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Merrimack College baseball held off a comeback from Long Island University on Saturday afternoon to even the season series at one.

Rapid Recap
Alex Haba got the scoring going for the Warriors in the first after finding a gap in left field, giving Merrimack an early one run lead. The Sharks evened the score at one in the bottom half of the first. Michael Golankiewicz hit a sac fly to center in the second, scoring another run for Merrimack. Scott Elliott then tripled home two runs, giving the Warriors their biggest lead of the afternoon at three. Later in the inning, Elliott scored on a wild pitch. The Sharks added a run in the bottom of the third to pull back within four. Ben Nelson knocked a single to the right side of the infield, scoring a run and giving the Warriors a four-run lead. Brydon Dolbashian singled through the right side in the sixth, making the lead five. Later in the inning Christian Gemelli tripled to left, scoring two more runs for Merrimack. Gemelli scored later in the inning on a passed ball. In the sixth through the bottom half of the eighth Long Island scored six runs to make it a two runs game. In the top of the ninth, Golankiewicz singled to center, scoring two runs. Frankie Ferrentino later doubled to left, scoring one and giving Merrimack a five-run win.

Gillette threw seven innings, allowed just four runs and earned his third win of the season.

Both Elliott and Haba finished the game with a team-high three hits.
