Loretto, PA.- The Merrimack Softball team fell short in their first chance to capture the NEC Softball Championship this afternoon as they were defeated by the Long Island University Sharks by a score of 7-5 on Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks took the early lead as two out solo home run gave them the early advantage in the first inning but the Warriors fired back quickly as their first five batters reached base and
Sydney Samuel smacked a bases clearing three run double to right field to make the score 3-1 Merrimack.
The Sharks would take the lead after a two run second inning to tie the score and the go ahead run in the third.
After a near three hour rain delay, the game resumed in the fourth inning, and in the fifth,
Courtney Lanpher put the Warriors back in front as she lined a home run to center field to make the score 5-4.
In the sixth, the Sharks would take the lead for good as they scored three runs in the inning. The Warriors were able to get the tying run to the plate twice but were unable to do so as the game closed on a close play at first.
