North Andover, MA-- The Merrimack College men's ice hockey team battled valiantly during their 2024–25 season opener, but a late goal by the Skyhawks sent the game to overtime where they would win it 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Lawler Arena.
Merrimack (0-1-0, 0-0-0): 2, Stonehill (1-0-0): 3
The Warriors got on the board first on the power-play, as
Ty Daneault went to the net off of
Harrison Roy's initial shot, and followed it up on the backhand to give the Warriors their first lead of the season.
Stonehill would tie the game with a power-play goal of their own to even the game up, heading into the first intermission.
A scoreless second period with see
Spencer Marquis making his first ever Warrior start, making five saves which included facing and stopping a penalty shot midway through the frame.
In the third period, it would be
Seamus Powell scoring his first Warriors goal firing the shot in from the point to give the Warriors a 2-1 advantage.
After a Merrimack icing Stonehill would pull their goalie, and after creating a turnover in the neutral zone, a shot from the corner would deflect its way past Marquis into the net tying the game at two with 8.9 seconds to play in regulation time.
Less than a minute into overtime, Stonehill would convert on a two on one chance as the original shot was saved, but then turned in on the rebound to hand the Warriors an opening night loss.
