Men's Basketball Loses Opening Game of Trojan Turkey Tipoff

TROY, Ala. – The Merrimack College men's basketball team was unable to come away with the win against the University of Texas San Antonio in their first of two games at the Trojan Turkey Tip Off.

Rapid Recap
This would be the first ever matchup between these two programs. Early on UTSA would jump on the Warriors going up big and forcing a Merrimack timeout. After settling in, Merrimack was able to get the offense going scoring on numerous possessions behind some great passing. The Warriors led by Adam Clark and Bryan Etumnu would claw their way back into the game from down as many as 16 to trailing by just a point at the half. In the second half, the two teams would trade leads back and forth to start. At the 11:03 mark, the Warriors would trail by four at 52-48. They would proceed to go on a ferocious 16-0 run to go up by 12 points and take control of the game. Merrimack would hold this lead until the late stages of the game. In those late stages, UTSA would go on a furious run that drew it closer, taking the lead from the Warriors with just 25 seconds remaining. Merrimack would have a couple chances to tie or take the lead in the final seconds but would not be able to convert, losing the game 76-74.
 
Notes and Numbers
  • Clark led the Warriors in scoring with a season high 28 points, 14 of which came from the free throw line
  • Bryan Etumnu finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks
  • Devon Savage was able to pour in 15 points in the loss
