Softball Captures First Win of 2024 With Victory Over UMass

Statesboro, GA.—Merrimack Softball notched win number one of the 2024 season with a 3-1 victory over the UMass Minutewomen on Sunday morning to close our their games in the Bash at the Boro Tournament.

Merrimack took the lead in the first inning as Sydney Samuel slapped a two out RBI single up the middle, scoring Madison Cerpa. UMass however would tie the game at the bottom half of the first.
 
As the game entered five scoreless innings, Madie Fornwalt impressed, striking out seven UMass batters and allowing only two hits over the stretch.
In the seventh inning, Madeline Arvai would smack a leadoff double and would score with one out in the inning after Sydney Shinopulos played small ball, with a bunt single to score Arvai to take the 2-1 lead. The Warriors would get an insurance run when Ellen Hubbard would single, scoring pinch runner Sam Russalesi. From there, Fornwalt would slam the door in the seventh, finishing a complete game effort.
 
Notes and Numbers:

• Madison Cerpa & Sydney Shinopulos had two hits each
• Ellen Hubbard, Courtney Lanpher, Gabby Kaduson, Sydney Samuel & Madeline Arvai had one hit in the game
• Madie Fornwalt allowed one run, scattered four hits and struck out seven hitters  en route to the complete game victory.

 
Up Next: Merrimack is off next week before returning to play on Friday, February 23^rd at a tournament hosted by UNC-Wilmington as they take on both Providence College and George Mason University at 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM.
