Rapid Recap
Video game numbers are what they like to call it. That's exactly what we would be in store for in this one. The Warriors matched up with the Hornets for the first of three on a windy and rainy Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. Andrew Heffernan got the start and right from the jump you could tell the weather was going to be a major factor. The wind was blowing every single ball out towards right center field. The Hornets tacked on three runs in the first with the first homer of the afternoon which would certainly not be the last. Christian Scanlon and Frankie Ferrentino each doubled in runs in the first inning for Merrimack as they trailed 3-2. In the second inning the Warriors put a beatdown on the baseball. Dawson Bryce and Ferrentino both homered and MC would score 7 runs to go up 9-3. DSU had a three run homer in the 3rd to draw closer at 9-6 and Christian Gemelli would respond with a bomb. The Hornets would add three more runs in the fourth to make it 10-9 as both starting pitchers were still on the mound at this point. From the fourth to the sixth inning the Warriors would score six runs including two homers from Christian Scanlon and another from Frankie Ferrentino. They led 16-10 going into the 7th. We we're not even close to done yet, the fun was just getting started. In inning number seven Delaware State got a couple runs back but that was nothing compared to the six run 8th inning they would have to take the lead. DSU was up 18-17 before a grand slam from Braydon Dolbashian with 2 outs to completely flip the game and swing momentum. Merrimack took control at 21-18 heading into the ninth as Jack Collins was tasked with closing it out. He would struggle as the bases became loaded with two outs and the Hornets would get some revenge hitting a grand slam of their own to take over the lead at 22-21. Merrimack was unable to get a score in the bottom half of the ninth as their 7 game win streak came to a screeching halt. All in all there would be 43 total runs, 42 total hits, and 15 home runs in this track meet of a baseball game.
