How it Happened
  • The first inning of the opening game of the series was a busy one. Iona struck first in their half of the inning scoring two runs. Andrew Heffernan responded with a two RBI single to tie it back up. In the second inning Harry Painter doubled to add a run and a Frankie Ferrentino solo homer in the third inning made it 4-2 Warriors. The Gaels proceeded to score the final three runs of the game adding one score each in the sixth, seventh and ninth to steal game one 5-4.
  • The second game of the series started off similar to the first with a busy opening inning. Iona scored a quartet of runs to begin the game to which Merrimack responded with two runs of their own off of Jayden Hamilton and Andrew Heffernan RBI's. However, that was all the scoring the Warriors ended up doing for the remainder of the game with Iona proceeding to win 13-2.
  • Merrimack aimed to avoid the sweep in the final game of the regular season which also happened to be senior day. Unlike the first two games of the series, the pitching ruled early on. Neither team was able to break through until a fifth inning score from the Gaels. Iona added one more in the sixth to go up 2-0. The Warriors bats we're quiet until the seventh when Christian Scanlon blasted a three-run homer over the right field fence to catapult Merrimack into the lead at 3-2. The Warriors looked to close it out in the ninth inning but a run from Iona tied it up, sending the game into extras after a silent bottom half of the ninth from the blue and gold. Cole Yennaco shut down the Gaels in the tenth on the mound and put the Warrior bats in prime position. Cavan Brady was hit by a pitch to put the winning run on base with Frankie Ferrentino stepping to the plate. Ferrentino then crushed a two-run walk off shot to give Merrimack the 5-3 senior day victory to finish off the regular season.
