NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team hung tough as they overturned a two goal deficit in the second period and scored three times but ultimately fell to the #7 ranked Clarkson Golden Knights in their season opener on Friday night at Lawler Arena.
Merrimack (0-1-0): 3, Clarkson: 6 (1-0-0)
The Golden Knights found the net right at the 90 second mark of the opening period. Merrimack battled back as Avery Anderson went to the net and dunked it home on the open side to level the game which would stay that way into the first intermission.
In the second period, Clarkson once again would score early with a goal just past the opening minute and an insurance goal at six minutes even. The Warriors once again showed that going to the net can make good things happen as McKenzie Cerrato potted her first in the blue and gold at 11:38 and with a powerplay awarded, Merrimack evened the game again as Emma Pfeffer scored on a deflection.
With the game in the balance in the third, Clarkson scored early again in the third to take a 4-3 lead. The two goal advantage for the Golden Knights would be re-established just past the midway point of the third and Clarkson closed the game out with their sixth of the game in the final four minutes.
