NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- The Merrimack College women's volleyball team defeated the Siena Saints in four sets by scores of 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23.
Coming off a thrilling five-set victory against Marist the night prior, the Warriors showed no signs of slowing down against the Saints.
Freshman outside hitter Tami Afolalu set a new career-high in the kills (14) and junior outside hitter Mckenna Shotwell followed up her 20-kill performance with another double-double (13 kills, season-high 21 digs). Junior opposite hitter Maiella Blandin made her presence felt on both the offensive and defensive end with a career-high 12 kills and four blocks. Senior libero Ella Maldonado added another 21 digs onto her impressive weekend while freshman setter Devon Lowe and senior setter Sophia DeBonis accounted for 20-plus assists each.
Merrimack's wins over Marist and Siena, both of whom ranked among the top five teams in the Metro Conference, was a product of a slow evolution, according to head coach Ken Nichols. It started the week prior after a back-to-back against Sacred Heart and Fairfield.
"Since then the confidence has been really high," Nichols said. "They genuinely believe."
Next up for the Warriors is a weekend trip to western New York where they will take on Niagara on Friday at 6 pm before facing Canisius on Saturday at 2 pm.
