Baseball Takes Game One Of Doubleheader Against Niagara
Courtland, NY. – Merrimack Baseball began their doubleheader to open the weekend against the Niagara Purple Eagles, winning game one with a 8-7 following a four run comeback, game two was delayed in the ninth.
In game one, Niagara jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Warriors would get back on track in the bottom half, with
Jack Andrews driving in two to get on the scoreboard. The Purple Eagles rebuilt their lead in the second and third innings, and despite a
Joey Frammartino RBI single, the Warriors trailed 7-3 heading into the middle innings.
Needing a lock down performance the rest of the way, Merrimack turned to
Colby Barker who pitched five scoreless innings in relief, allowing four hits and striking out four.
With the pitching putting zero's up, the bats came up big in crunch time as
Garrett McGovern and
Jack Andrews both notching RBI singles in the fifth and sixth to cut the deficit to two and then in the eighth, Merrimack would go ahead for good with
Joey Frammartino scoring two on an RBI single to tie the score and then he would be scored himself on a
Jack Andrews sacrifice fly, his fourth RBI of the game.
In the ninth,
Cole Yennaco would pick his first save of the season to complete six innings of scoreless ball by the Warriors' bullpen.
In game two,
Nick Hunkele went six innings from the start, posting a Quality Start, allowing two runs and striking out three.
Joey Frammartino, Greg Cristano, and Brooks Criague all had a hit each.
The Warriors trailed 4-0 in the ninth before the finish was delayed till tomorrow due to rain.
Merrimack will finish that contest and begin the next around 12 PM tomorrow.
