Pete Byron is in his second season with the Merrimack College football program in 2019-20 and serves as assistant defensive line coach and defensive tackles coach. He helped the unit produce an all-conference second team selection in 2018 while averaging nearly two sacks per game.
Byron arrives in North Andover following a number of coaching stints at other college programs across all three Divisions. Most recently, he spent 2017 at the University of New England (DIII) and served as recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator, defensive line coach and quarterbacks coach. He helped UNE during its first year of competition as a program.
The previous two seasons, Byron served as a defensive and special teams coaching intern at Cornell (DI/Ivy League). Among his variety of responsibilities, he conducted opponent video breaks, tendency reports, and evaluations; conducted skill evaluations for prospective student-athletes at the FCS level; scouted the state of Ohio and Michigan as part of his efforts to assist the recruiting coordinator for the program; organized and coordinated offensive scout and special teams scout meetings and practice, among other responsibilities.
Byron also spent two seasons (2014-16) at Springfield College (DIII). He worked with the wide receivers and fullbacks during his time with the Pride and also served as recruiting coordinator. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he organized tour groups, overnight visits, and hosts for recruits. He personally recruited in the North Shore, Central Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New Hampshire Prep Schools, yielding 10 commitments.
Before Springfield, Byron worked as a wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 2013, as well as helping out with the receiving corps at Haverhill High School in 2012.
A 2012 graduate of Ferrum College with a Criminal Justice degree, Byron was a two-sport athlete at Ferrum, playing on the football and baseball teams. The Haverhill, Massachusetts, native obtained his Master's degree in Athletic Administration during his two years at Springfield.
