Hunter Schmell

  • Title
    Assistant Men's Lacrosse Coach
A two-time All-American as a player, Merrimack College graduate Hunter Schmell '18 enters his fourth season with the program as a volunteer assistant coach in 2021-22.

He has helped guide the Warriors in their transition to Division I lacrosse, as he was on the sidelines during the program's first ever Division I win in 2020 at Michigan. He also manned the sidelines in 2021 for the team's first full season at the top level of college lacrosse, when the Warriors went 5-5 overall and compiled a 4-4 mark in conference play during their inaugural season in the NEC.

Schmell was part of both of Merrimack's national championships, the first as a player, captain and invaluable component of the 2018 squad that dominated its way to the title and then again as a coach in the spring of 2019. The former All-American short stick defensive midfielder had quite the impact on a squad that, while talented, was still young in key areas of the field, none more obvious than in the transition unit and on close defense. Schmell would help the Warriors finish in the top-20 nationally in scoring defense and also helped produce four NEILA All-Region First Team selections either at defense or transition midfield/face-off. He also helped the Warriors transition to Division I lacrosse during the 2020 season, as they earned their first victory at the level in February against Michigan.

The Warriors had some growing pains during parts of the 2019 campaign after losing key members of the defense, transition midfield and faceoff units from that remarkable 2018 team that Schmell captained, but everything came together in May when the Warriors upset each of the top-four teams in the country as the No. 6 seed, posting three road wins to reach the title game and then doubling up Limestone, 16-8, to earn the trophy yet again.

After transferring to the program as a sophomore, Schmell eventually earned the status as one of the country's best two-way players and was a key component of the 2018 national championship squad. The short stick defensive midfielder was a two-time All-American, earning first team accolades as a senior in 2018, and was named the USILA Short Stick Defensive Midfielder of the Year in 2018.

Schmell was also a two-time NEILA All-Region and NE10 All-Conference first team selection. The Woodstock, Vermont, native played in 46 games as a Warrior, causing 22 turnovers and totaling 80 ground balls while also finishing his career with 28 points on 19 goals and nine assists.
