Kyle Smith

Kyle Smith enters his seventh season with the Merrimack College men's lacrosse coaching staff in 2020-21 as the team begins its second year of Division I reclassification as a member of the Northeast Conference.

A former standout at the University of Massachusetts, Smith -- who is the program's first full-time assistant coach in its history -- works directly with the team's offense, extra-man and goalie units. Since Smith's arrival, Merrimack has reached new heights, winning the New England Championship in all five seasons, claiming the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in 2018, earning a league regular season title in 2019 while advancing to the semifinal round of the NCAA DII Lacrosse Championship in both 2015 and 2016, the national finals in 2017 and, finally, winning back-to-back national championships  as part of historic 2018 and 2019 seasons. With an 11-3 career record in the NCAA Tournament, Smith has been part of every NCAA Tournament win in program history. He was also on the sidelines when the Warriors claimed their first ever Division I victory against Michigan in February of 2020.

Offensively, Merrimack has consistently finished near the top of the country in scoring offense and man-up offense under Smith's tutelage. To no coincidence, Merrimack has produced 28 All-Americans, 41 NE10 All-Conference selections, 48 NEILA All-New England honorees, four NEILA Players of the Year, nine First Team All-Americans, a two-time DII National Player of the Year, a DII Midfielder of the Year, a DII Defensemen of the Year, a two-time DII Attackman of the Year, a DII Faceoff Specialist of the Year, a DII Short Stick Defensive Midfielder of the Year, a DII Longstick Midfielder of the Year, two NE10 Players of the Year, two NE10 Defensive Players of the Year, and two NE10 Rookies of the Year.

Smith graduated from UMass in 2013 after a successful four-year stint with the Minutemen. He played four seasons under head coach Greg Cannella and was a three-year starter. He garnered numerous honors throughout his playing career, such as Offensive MVP, Most Improved, All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) conference designation and was named to the CAA's All-Tournament Team. He finished his career with 125 points (79g, 46a) and was one of only 39 Minutemen all-time to record more than 100 points.

Smith went on to be drafted by the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and played with the club from 2013-15. He also earned a Master's Degree in Sports Leadership from Northeastern University in 2016.

Smith's father, Norman Smith, was a two-time All-American at the University of Massachusetts and is a member of the New England Lacrosse Hall of Fame, University of Massachusetts Amherst Athletic Hall of Fame, Western Massachusetts Hall of Fame and the Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Smith's grandfather, Neville Smith, is a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Smith graduated from Longmeadow High School where he was the schools all-time leading scorer with 413 points (249g, 164a), a two-time All-American, a 2008 State Champion and team captain. He was also a captain for both the football and basketball teams where he won numerous team championships and individual accolades.

A native of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, Smith currently resides in Boston.
