Hayden West-Mather

Hayden West-Mather is in his first year as head coach from the Merrimack College men’s volleyball team after serving as the head coach for Nichols College.

In his first and only year serving as the head coach with the Bisons, West-Mather led the team to a 21-15 record. Capped off by a championship win over #3 ranked Endicott in the New England Volleyball Conference (NEVC) finals, West-Mather and the Bisons punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament. The team earned victories over Randolph-Macon and #3 ranked Stevens in the tournament. His victory over Randolph-Macon made him the youngest head coach in history to win a NCAA tournament game. The win over Stevens in the sweet 16 is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in men's volleyball tournament history.

"Hayden is someone who emphasizes discipline and this promotion is a testament to his skills and leadership." said Emme Price, head women's volleyball coach at South Puget Sound Community College.

Before arriving at Nichols, West-Mather coached Beantown Volleyball in Natick, Massachusetts. Not only did he serve as the head coach for both the U17 girls and U18 boys teams, West-Mather also served as the Director of Marketing and Operations. He was responsible for recruiting high level talent across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. He served as the coach from 2021 to his departure to Nichols in 2024.

West-Mather got his first taste of high school coaching in 2024 at Natick High School. Training under Peter Suxho, father of olympic setter Donald Suxho, West-Mather implemented international training styles and communication styles. He helped guide the junior varsity program to a Massachusetts state semifinal appearance, and a #2 overall ranking in the state.

West-Mather’s father Andy Mather is a longtime volleyball coach at Boston College, Roger Williams and Simmons. Hayden began coaching at 18 years in Boston, Cape Cod and in Ontario, Canada.

West-Mather currently resides in South Boston.
