Joe Kreinsen joined Merrimack College as the Offensive Line Coach in the spring of 2024 after a stint as the Wide Receiver Coach. His recent tenure has been marked by significant achievements:
Kreinsen was also instrumental in helping the development of offensive lineman Cole Birdow who would go on to earn an opportunity as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots. Under his guidance at Merrimack, the team finished 25th in the nation in rushing yards per game with a 192.5 average, setting the school FCS record.
His offensive line also ranked 22nd nationally in yards per carry with 4.9, again setting a new school FCS record.
The team achieved an impressive 90% Red Zone Scoring percentage, placing 13th in the nation.
Before arriving at Merrimack, Kreinsen spent a season at Thomas More University (KY), aiding their transition to Division 2. As the offensive line coach and run game coordinator, he helped Thomas More secure top positions in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) for rushing yards and sacks allowed, with their offense ranking in the top 10 nationally for Red Zone Scoring percentage.
Prior to Thomas More, Kreinsen was the Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator at Lake Erie College in 2022, and the Offensive Line Coach in 2021, contributing to the most successful seasons in school history.
In 2022, his offense set benchmarks not seen since 2014 in points and total yards per game, finishing first in passing yards in the GMAC and 10th in Division 2. His units broke school records, including producing the first 1000-yard receiver and leading to multiple all-GMAC awards for players.
Kreinsen's experience also includes being an offensive graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh (2019-2020), where he worked with Jimmy Morrissey, who went on to be drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders. At UMass Amherst from 2014 to 2016, he was an offensive GA and later assistant director of football operations, aiding in the development of NFL prospects like Elijah Wilkinson and Jack Driscoll.
A native of Natick, Massachusetts, Kreinsen was a standout athlete in high school and continued his success at Westfield State, where he was a four-year starter, team captain, and earned All-NEFC honors. His academic accolades include the DeOrmond Tuss McLaughry Award and induction into the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame’s Hampshire Honor Society. Kreinsen holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Westfield State and a master's in labor studies from UMass.
