Former Coaches Anderson, Doneghey Instrumental in Chicago's Run to Stanley Cup
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Chicago Blackhawks captured their third Stanley Cup in six years on Monday, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning, 2-0, in Game 6 of the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals, and two former coaches of the Merrimack College men's ice hockey team helped make it possible with their recruiting efforts.
Ron Anderson, the winningest head coach in school history during his 15-year tenure, and Mike Doneghey, a former assistant and associate head coach during the early 2000s, as well as a member of the team as a student-athlete and a 1993 graduate of the College, each are members of the Blackhawks' Hockey Operations and Scouting department.
Anderson completed his 16th season with the Blackhawks and his seventh as Director of Player Recruitment. He serves as a Pro Scout after previously serving as an Amateur Scout. Doneghey, meanwhile, is one of six Amateur Scouts for the organization.
Anderson spent 18 years on the coaching staff at Merrimack, including 15 as Head Coach (1983-98), where he won three consecutive ECAC championships and helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament as a Division I independent school in 1988. There, they stunned Hockey East champion Northeastern in the tournament's opening round before bowing out to eventual national champion Lake Superior State in the quarterfinals. He is the still the winningest coach in school history, finishing his tenure with a 255-249-24 record and .507 winning percentage.
Doneghey was a member of the coaching staff for six seasons (1999-2005) and served as associate head coach during his final two years on campus. As a player (1989-93), he helped lead them to the Hockey East Playoffs and was given the Coaches' Award as a senior in 1993. He graduated from Merrimack with a degree in Sociology
