NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College men's and women's tennis programs learned on Tuesday afternoon that two members of the men's program, three student-athletes on the women's team and the women's program as a whole earned recognition from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as the ITA unveiled its 2017 All-Academic Teams and Scholar Athletes.
Graduated senior
Grace Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and rising juniors
Mana Seifaei (North York, Ontario) and
Meredith Wedro (La Crosse, Wis.) were named ITA Scholar Athletes, while the team itself received distinction as an All-Academic Team. The Warriors posted a team GPA of 3.35, meeting the 3.20 minimum requirement team earn the distinction as an All-Academic Team.
In addition to all her accolades as the top player in program history, Messina posted a 3.91 GPA during her senior year. Seifaei led the team with a perfect 4.00 GPA as an electrical engineering, adding on to her all-conference selection at first doubles. Wedro rounded out the group with a 3.64 GPA during her sophomore season, which featured her first-ever victory during the ITA East Regional Championship.
On the men's side, rising senior
Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) and rising sophomore
Alex Fedorov (Guilderland, N.Y.). A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and Northeast-10 Conference All-Academic honoree, Belov completed his junior year with a 3.73 GPA. The NE10 Rookie of the Year following a superb freshman campaign, Fedorov posted a near-perfect year in the classroom, finishing with a 3.91 GPA.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2016 and spring 2017).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
