NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Unbeaten through five games, the Merrimack College women's ice hockey team hits the road this weekend to take on two of the top teams in the Hockey East; Friday night against #6 Boston College, and Saturday afternoon against UConn.
Last Time Out:
- The Warriors trailed for nearly 30 minutes Friday, October 12, but a late goal in the third period lifted them to a draw against Boston University.
- The Warriors picked up its first goal of the game on their second power play score of the season. Tick-tack-toe went the Warriors, starting with sophomore Megan Fergusson, who fed into senior Dominique Kremer; from there, senior Emily Volpe picked up her first goal of the season on a shot just outside the crease.
- Boston University was able to tie it up just 43 seconds later. In the offensive zone, a pass from Alex Allan to the blue line found Natasza Tarnowski; Tarnowski's pass across the line was timed up by Abby Cook, who beat senior Samantha Ridgewell between the pipes for the leveler.
- Four minutes after the equalizer, the visitors took the lead. After nearly clearing the puck out of the defensive zone, Reagan Rust was able to keep it inside the blue line, and fired a shot in. A bad deflection to the shot on net resulted in Ridgewell getting crossed up, and gave the Terriers the 2-1 lead with three minutes left in the first period.
- Despite playing down for nearly two full periods, the Warriors tied the game with just under three minutes left in regulation. A pass from freshman Chloe Cook reached senior Mikyla Grant-Mentis; her stretch pass through the neutral zone hit senior Katelyn Rae, whose shot found the back of the net to tie the game at two apiece.
Sizing up the Competition:
- Both #6 BC and UConn were picked to finish in the top six during the Hockey East preseason coaches' poll, with the Eagles receiving nine of the 10 total first place votes.
- UConn finished 2017-18 with a 16-14-9 mark, but rumbled its way to a runner-up finish in the Hockey East tournament. So far, the Huskies are 4-1 overall, and 2-1 in WHEA play, upending Vermont and Holy Cross.
- The Eagles come into the weekend at 3-2 overall, and will be opening Hockey East play on Friday night against the Warriors. With season-opening losses against #9 Minnesota Duluth, three straight victories – two over #10 St. Lawrence – put the Eagles back on track.
