Women’s Hockey Set to Take on Vermont, Holy Cross

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. –The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team has their first back to back home-away stint of the season as they host Vermont on Homecoming Weekend Friday afternoon, and then hit the road to meet Holy Cross on Saturday night.

Last Time Out:
  • It took 25 minutes of scoreless hockey before either team was able to find the twine but senior Paige Voight broke the deadlock when she netted her first goal of the season, as she was fed from Dominique Kremer and Megan Fergusson to give Merrimack a 1-0 lead.
  • Holding a 1-0 lead through the final five minutes of the second period, the score remained the same for much of the third period. However, with less than five minutes left in regulation, sophomore Kate Bukolska connected with senior Jessica Bonfe for the goal; Bukolska's first point of the season gave Bonfe her second goal on the young season.
  • Less than two minutes after the the Warriors extended their lead, the Huskies got one back with just over three minutes left in regulation. Natalie Snodgrass and Catherine Crawley teamed up to feed Taylor Wabick, making it a one goal game with more than enough time left for a potential equalizer.
  • With 23 seconds left in the third period, Katelyn Rae slipped an empty-net goal across the ice, capping the Huskies' comeback attempt, giving the Warriors a 3-1 road victory.
Sizing up the Competition:
  • Both Vermont and Holy Cross were picked to finish in the same realm of the Hockey East Preseason Coaches' poll as Merrimack.
  • Vermont finished the 2017-18 season with a 7-13-4 mark, finishing 8th in the WHEA. So far, the Catamounts are 1-2-2 overall, and 1-2-0 in WHEA play, which is tied for 6th in the conference, after splitting last weekend with a win against New Hampshire and a loss to #6 Boston College; Olivia Kilberg leads the Catamounts in points with four on the season.
  • Holy Cross remains winless in their inaugural season in the WHEA, entering the weekend losing five of their first seven games. The Crusaders will host #6 Boston College on Friday night before hosting the Warriors on Saturday night. Amanda Krewer is the leading scoring for the Crusaders with two goals and two assists, giving her four points on the season.
Up Next
The Warriors return home on Friday, November 2, as the team squares off against the University of Maine. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lawler Rink.
