NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Merrimack started and finished the second half with goals Wednesday night, sailing to a 3-1 victory over the University of New Haven at Martone-Mejail Field.

The Basics
Score: Merrimack 3,
New Haven, 1
Records: Merrimack (7-2-0) | New Haven (2-8-0)
Location: Martone-Mejail Field | North Andover, Mass.

How it Happened
  • The Warrior defense was tested early, as a New Haven shot eight minutes into the first half nearly went in. Senior Tyler Packett made an incredible diving save when Pablo Perez-Gomez curled in a ball from outside the 18 yard box.
  •  Despite 10 fouls in the first 20 minutes of action, Merrimack didn't tally a shot on frame until the 17th minute, when junior Kevin Esper hit a volley that sailed just over the crossbar.
  • Merrimack hit the score column in the 53rd minute. A set piece from senior Lars Sund was misplayed inside the box, which led to a Merrimack goal.
  • Minutes later, the Chargers countered and tied the game. Junior Pablo Perez-Gomez got feed inside the box, created an opportunity with a move outside the six, and slid it past Packett for the leveler.
  • With 12 minutes left in regulation, the Warriors retook the lead. After Merrimack forced a corner, Esper bent a ball onto the back side of the 6 yard box; junior Mirko Nufi rose up and knocked it in.
  • Merrimack iced the cake in the 88th minute. On a New Haven throw-in deep in their own end, freshman Tola Showunmi stole the pass in and beat the keeper to make it 3-1.
