Browne Sets New Strikeout Record, Offense Steals 13 Bases in Baseball’s Victories at Saint Michael’s Saturday

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Merrimack College baseball program won both of its games, 12-7 and 8-4, on Saturday at Saint Michael's, sweeping a doubleheader at Doc Jacobs Field in Colchester, Vt. Senior starter PJ Browne won the opener, fanning nine Purple Knights and recording his 231st career strikeout, which set a new program record. The Navy and Gold also swiped 13 bases in the opening game, which is the second most nationwide in a game this season.

Rapid Recap (Game 1):
  • The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, thanks to RBI from senior Matt Nicholson and junior Cory Wasylow. After two quick outs in the third, the Warriors collected four straight hits that resulted in three runs. Wasylow hit a two-run double and senior Ricky Smith picked up a RBI single to make it a 5-0 game
  • Browne started on a roll, striking out a pair of Purple Knights in each of the first three innings. The milestone moment came in the bottom of the fourth when the Rutland, Mass. native punched out a Purple Knight swinging for his 231st career K
  • Merrimack tacked on two runs to take a 7-0 lead to the bottom of the fifth, but Saint Michael's hit four doubles in the inning off Browne to score three runs and cut its deficit to four, 7-3
  • The Warriors immediately answered with three more runs in the top of the sixth. Two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly accounted for the runs, while Merrimack swiped five of its 13 steals in the sixth inning alone
  • Entering the bottom of the eighth with an 11-6 lead, the Purple Knights scored once which brought sophomore Stephen Fleury into the game. The righty threw 1.1 innings of relief to record his third save of the year
Rapid Recap (Game 2):
  • Senior Anthony Lupi took the ball in the second game, and entered the bottom of the third throwing in a 1-1 game. The Purple Knights scored to pair of unearned runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead
  • The Warriors got one run back in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at three-all, and then broke the game open with a five-run seventh. Sophomore Nick Shumski hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-base throwing error. Back-to-back RBI doubles for Matthew Ronai and Nicholson brought Merrimack's advantage to 6-3, while Wasylow and Smith recorded consecutive run-scoring singles to increase Merrimack's lead to 8-3
  • Lupi settled in to put up clean innings in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. The team captain faced the minimum over his final three innings of work, leaving after eight frames. Junior Riley Sorenson worked the ninth to finish the game

  • Merrimack's strikeout record sat at 230 entering Saturday, held by Joe Carnevale '15. Carnevale set the record during Browne's freshman season. His nine punch outs on the day fell one short of his season high
  • Browne's ERA sits at 2.22, which is on pace for a career high and ranks eighth in the NE10
  • Merrimack's 13 steals trail on the 14 thefts by Saint Thomas Aquinas and Chowan for the most by a Division II program in 2018. Tyler Lyne and sophomore Joey Porricelli combined for seven, with the former setting a career high with four and the latter swiping a personal best of three
  • Five Warriors posted multi-hit efforts. Wasylow totaled four RBI for the second straight game while he tied with sophomore Thomas Joyce for the team high with three base knocks

  • The senior southpaw's run of recent success continued, throwing his third straight quality start. Lupi has thrown at least seven innings in each appearance, totaling a 1.44 ERA during the resurgence
  • Offensively, Wasylow led the way again with three hits and two runs. The starting left fielder is 10-for-16 over his last three games with nine RBI
  • The Warriors have now won 10 of their last 12 games, pulling above .500 in Northeast Division play. The Navy and Gold sit 0.5 games behind Bentley for fourth in the division
