Track & Field Teams Concludes First Day of NE10 Outdoor Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Merrimack College track & field teams concluded the first day of the Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Championships at Southern Connecticut State University Friday. The men's (17 points) and the women's (10 points) teams each finished in eighth place after day one.

Day 1 Highlights
  • Senior John Braga began the outdoor championships on a strong note. He won three of the first five events of the decathlon and scored 3,726 points after the first day. His next closest competitor was Kevin Hack from Assumption, who finished day one with 3,416 points. Sophomore Ryan Nesta tied Braga for first in the 100m dash, while winning the 400m dash portion of the decathlon. He also finished just behind Braga in the shot put event by a tenth of a centimeter at 12.34m. Nesta wrapped up day one of the decathlon in third place with 3,289 points.
  • Junior Michaela Pernell won her preliminary heat in the 100m (11.95) dash and 200m (24.27) dash, qualifying first in both events for the finals on Saturday. Freshman Calene Lazare also qualified for the finals in both events. The freshman had the fifth fastest time in both the 100m (12.18) and 200m (25.00)
  • Freshman Patrick Forrest (21.87) qualified for the 200m dash finals on Saturday.
  • Sophomores Kevin Russo (54.32m) and Trevor Woodman (52.66m) both scored in the javelin throw, placing fifth and sixth in the event.
  • Freshman Travis Hunt scored eighth in the hammer throw, with a distance of 42.16m.
  • In the heptathlon, sophomore Gabrielle Eldridge placed fifth in the high jump and seventh in the 100m hurdles. She combined for 2,447 points and sixth overall through the first day of the heptathlon.
  • The women's 4x800 relay team finished in fifth place with a time of 9:51.37 scoring four points towards the team score. The team consisted of Margaret Byrne, Julia Dempsey, Hannah Schnyder, and Kylie Reardon.
  • The men's 4x800relay team of Niall Coughlin, Keith Steinbrecher, Matt Reimels and Connor Murphy finished sixth with a time of 5:51.16.
  • Reardon also set a personal record in the 1500m race and came in seventh with a time of 4:50.34.
  • Junior John Sava smashed his previous personal best in the 10k race by over 12 seconds. His time was 33:44.53.
