NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.. – Freshmen Kristina Calistro and Rosemary Campanella each claimed singles victories over NYIT – the six-time defending East Coast Conference champions – on Friday afternoon, but the Merrimack College women's tennis program suffered a 5-2 defeat to the Bears in the Warriors' season opener at North Andover High School.

Rapid Recap
  • Playing under new Intercollegiate Tennis Association rules that awards one overall point for doubles, the Bears won all three flights to take a 1-0 into the singles portion of the match.
  • Senior captain Mana Seifaei and Campanella debuted as a pair at No. 1, falling by a 6-1 margin. The second and third flights each had 6-4 decisions that went in favor of the visitors. Senior Lauren Persson and Calistro played at No. 2 while sophomore Cassie Restrepo and junior Mia Briggs reunited as a duo at the third flight
  • Calistro posted a dominant performance at fourth singles in her first-ever collegiate match. She only dropped one game (6-1) in her opener before winning in shutout fashion in the second frame
  • Campanella dropped her first set (3-6), but won the second frame in just eight games (6-2) to force a 10-point tiebreaker. The Wells, Maine native delivered a winner on the 20th point, 11-9
