Women’s Basketball Handles ENC on Wednesday Night

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – The Merrimack College women's basketball team beat Eastern Nazarene College 82-50 on Wednesday night.  Junior forward Alyssa Casey led the way, scoring 17 points in 20 minutes during the win.  Senior captain Emily Houle scored a career-high 14 points in the Warriors' victory.  Senior Denia Davis-Stewart also chipped in with 10 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks in the win.  The Warriors moved to 3-2 on the season.

Rapid Recap
  • Merrimack came out of the gates on fire, starting on a 9-0 run that caused an ENC timeout.  The run was highlighted by Casey who had five points.  The Warriors held a lead of 13 at the end of the first quarter after a Kaylee Thomas three with 1:45 left.
  • ENC came storming back in the second quarter to cut the Merrimack lead to three.  Jenn Burnham had five points during the run for the Lions.  The Warriors would not be denied and went on a 13-0 run towards the end of the half.  Two three-pointers by freshman Jayme DeCesare and one by sophomore Kate Mager gave Merrimack a 14-point lead heading into halftime.  
  • Like in the first quarter Merrimack came out of the locker room hot.  The Warriors went on a 14-0 run to start the half.  Casey had eight points during the run that put Merrimack up 28 early in the third quarter.  Houle had back-to-back threes in the quarter to put Merrimack in solid position for the fourth.
  • In the fourth quarter the Warriors controlled the ball, leading by a game-high 34 points after a Houle fast break layup.  Sophomore Caroline Wilson scored her first points of the season on a three late in the fourth quarter.
Notes and Numbers
  • For the second time this season, Casey led the team in scoring, the first was when she scored 15 points in the Warriors loss to Dartmouth.
  • Davis-Stewart continues to pad the stat sheet in the blocks department.  She currently leads the country with 31 blocked shots
  • The Warriors shot 37 percent from the field including 40% from long range.
  • DeCesare had a team-high five assists on the night, followed up by junior Marissa Gattuso who had three.
Up Next
The Warriors head to Worcester to take on the Crusaders of Holy Cross on Saturday night.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
