Women’s Basketball Buries Brown in Second Half During Tuesday Night's Victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Merrimack College women's basketball team outscored Brown University 43-26 in the second half on its way to a 15-point victory on Tuesday night.  Sophomore Kate Mager had a team-high 21 points after going 7-9 from the field, which included going 4-5 from long range.  Senior Denia Davis-Stewart had her fifth double-double of the season after scoring 15 points and pulling in 14 rebounds.  Freshman Jayme DeCesare chipped in with 15 points of her own in the victory.  With the win, the Warriors head into Thanksgiving break with a 4-3 record in their first Division I season.

Rapid Recap
  • Brown came out of the gates swinging going on a 7-1 run.  The Warriors made a comeback towards the end of the half after threes by freshman Diamond Christian and  Mager made the score 16-13.   
  • Mager continued to shoot well from long range in the second quarter.  She nailed back-to-back threes midway through the quarter to force Brown to call a timeout.  Less than a minute later DeCesare hit a three of her own to tie things up at 22.  Brown went on a 5-0 run at the end of the half that gave them the lead heading into the break.   
  • In the third Merrimack came out of the locker room on fire.  Mager and DeCesare had back-to-back buckets that gave the Warriors an early two-point lead.  The tandem continued to score going on a 6-0 by themselves midway through the quarter.  With just over a minute left Davis-Stewart knocked down two free throws that gave Merrimack a 11-point lead going into the final frame.
  • The Warriors started the quarter on a 7-0 run highlighted by a three from junior Alyssa Casey.  Merrimack continued to control the ball and the lead in the quarter forcing five Brown turnovers.  Down the stretch the Warriors went 7-8 from the line on their way to their fourth victory of the season.
Notes and Numbers
  • Christian had a career-high 11 points off the bench for Merrimack.  She went 3-6 from the field and also had five assists on the night.
  • Along with her double-double, Davis Stewart had six blocks in the game.
  • Merrimack went 50% from three-point range in the contest
  • In total the Warriors forced 19 Brown turnovers

The Warriors will host Fisher College on Wednesday, December 4th.  The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
