BOCA RATON, Fla.  – Making his first start in two years, senior Cam Monagle scattered five hits and allowed just one run over seven innings of work, the Merrimack College baseball team scored five runs for him including the first career homer for junior Nick Shumski and the Warriors put up another victory down in Florida, 5-2, against Adelphi University.

Thursday's game was played at Lynn University's Baseball Field; the Warriors and Panthers will reconvene tomorrow for a second game, set to be played at the Santaluces Athletic Complex in Lantana, Fla.

Rapid Recap
  • After retiring six of the first seven batters he faced – without allowing a hit – Monagle ran into his lone trouble of the day in the top of the third. A one-out double put a Panther in scoring position, and a two-out single accounted for the lone as Adelphi opened a brief 1-0 lead
  • It was brief because the Warriors clapped back with a two-run bottom of the third. After loading the bases without recording an out, Shumski hit a RBI single to tie the game. A wild pitch in the next at-bat allowed sophomore Thomas Crowley to score, moving the Warriors in front
  • Monagle did not allow a run the rest of his outing, and Adelphi did not see a baserunner reach scoring position over the next four innings. The right-handed hurler retired seven straight batters at one point, and put down 12 of the final 14 Panthers he faced through seven innings of work
  • Merrimack's final three runs of the day were created via the long ball. Junior Thomas Joyce hit a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the sixth. One inning later and with classmate Joey Porricelli standing on first, Shumski connected on an opposite field homer to make it a 5-1 game entering the eighth
  • Junior Stephen Fleury relieved Monagle for the final two frames, allowing just a single run to complete Merrimack's victory

  • Monagle's final line (W): 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K
  • It was both the first start and first victory for Monagle since his sophomore season. Tossing 10.1 innings through two appearances this year, the Cambridge, Mass. native already eclipsed his total innings pitched from a year ago. Opponents are hitting .189 off Monagle so far this year
  • Shumski became the third different Warrior and third different member of the junior class to hit a round-tripper, joining Joyce and Porricelli. Shumski knocked in three of Merrimack's five runs, moving into a tie for second on the team with nine RBI in 2019
  • Senior Matthew Ronai added a double, his team-leading fourth of the season
  • Freshman Ben Nelson made his second start of the year at second base, recording his second career hit and scoring his second career run
