NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After a 10-day respite, the No. 18 Merrimack College women's lacrosse program returns to action with a short trip to nearby Lowell for the team's first-ever meeting against UMass Lowell on Tuesday afternoon. Game time from Cushing Field is set for 4 p.m.
Five Things To Know:
- Merrimack is in search of its first victory after a pair of narrow defeats against two of the region's top schools. The Warriors were denied an upset bid against No. 12 Mercy back on Feb. 19, falling by a goal despite leading through much of the contest, and then dropped a 7-2 matchup on the road against No. 7 LIU Post, an NCAA Tournament qualifier.
- Merrimack is averaging an even seven goals per game after two contests while yielding 10 goals per contest on the other end. The Warriors tallied 12 goals in their season opener but were held to two in their most recent outing, marking their lowest single-game output on offense since 2017.
- Senior captain Amber Feminella, who finished 2018 with a record-breaking season featuring a single-season school record of 91 points, picked up where she left off with a six-point outing in her season debut against Mercy. Her six points are most on the squad and one point ahead of last year's NE10 Rookie of the Year, sophomore Haley Bartlett, who has five points thus far on three goals and two helpers.
- Senior Lauren Trepaney has been stellar in two starts in net thus far; she ranks in the top-five in both goaltending categories in the NE10, while her 11.50 saves per game are good for second in the conference and 12th in the country.
- Merrimack will be meeting UMass Lowell for the first time in school history, and considering next year will be the Warriors first in Division I as a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC), the matchup could be a frequent one in the years ahead. The River Hawks have gone 2-4 out of the gate with back-to-back victories against Holy Cross (15-5) and Iona (15-8) most recently. Three UML players have over 20 points thus far led by senior Paige MacEachern's 26 (18g, 8a). Renee Gonzalez has started all six games in net and has an 11.83 goals against and 418 save percentage.
