NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After winning the NE-10 last season the Merrimack College women's lacrosse team will look to make its mark on Division I and the Northeast Conference.
The Warriors open up their inaugural Division I season on Saturday when the University of Vermont visits Duane Stadium for the very first time.
Five Things to Know:
- Merrimack ended its run in Division II by winning the NE-10 tournament, beating #1 team in the country Le Moyne College 10-9. The Warriors went on an unprecedented three game run beating three national ranked teams in the span of five days.
- The Warriors return their leading scorer junior Haley Bartlett who scored 61 goals in 18 games last season. Bartlett is joined by junior Taylor Darrell and senior captain Ally DaCosta who both scored 20+ goals last season. Senior captain Courtney Capobianco will lead the Warriors on the defensive side of the ball. Capobianco has started every game of her Merrimack career.
- The NEC Preseason Poll was released last Thursday afternoon by the league. Merrimack was voted eighth, only picked to finish ahead of Central Connecticut State. Wagner was picked to finish in the top spot receiving six of the nine first-place votes. Mount St. Mary's earned the other three first-place votes giving them the second spot. Robert Morris, Bryant, Long Island, Saint Francis, and Sacred Heart round out the 3-7 spots in the poll.
- Head coach Julie Duffy enters fourth season as the Merrimack head coach. Since taking over the head coaching role with the Warriors, Duffy has a record of 29-26. Last season the Hartwick College graduate led Merrimack to its first NE-10 title under her tutelage.
- Last season the Catamounts went 8-7 including an outstanding 7-2 record on the road. Head coach Sarah Dalton Graddock returns Maris Large who scored 23 goals last season for Vermont. The Catamounts graduated both goalkeepers so their will be a new person in between the pipes for Vermont.
