Women's Soccer Falters at LIU

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. —  The Merrimack women's soccer team came up short in a Northeast Conference slog at Long Island University, falling 2-1 on a rainy Saturday afternoon in New York.

The Summary
  • In a scoreless first half, the Warriors defense was steady with Michele Silva making a few early challenges on crosses through goal before turning aside a 36' corner kick by the Sharks to keep LIU off the board.
  • Merrimack's best opportunity of the first half came midway through the first on the Warriors' own corner kick. Rebecca Harty's service bobbled around a water-logged box, where Erin Tyldesley stepped up for a low shot that edged out wide right.
  • LIU took the lead in the 64' minute on a one-one-one opportunity through the right side for the goal. The host Sharks would double their lead late in the match, on an 81' tally.
  • The Warriors fired four shots on goal in the second half, with Abigail Cieri, Ella Cormier and Molly Murnane challenging the Sharks keeper late from all parts of the box.   
Stats & Figures
  • Michele Silva opened the match in goal, monitoring four shot attempts without facing a shot on goal. Freshman Claire DeFlora came in for the second, making two saves in her 45 minute appearance at goalkeeper.
  • Cieri and Murnane led the squad with five shot attempts and two shots on goal each in the contest, with Cormier and Vanessa Wainwright adding attempts on net for Merrimack.
