Osei’s Overtime Goal Gives Men’s Soccer Victory Over Central Connecticut

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – Henry Osei scored the game winning goal in the 106th minute of play on Sunday afternoon to seal the victory for Merrimack College over Central Connecticut State University. The goal was the senior's second of the season and was assisted by Stefano Pesenti. Earlier in the game Frantz Pierrot scored his sixith goal of the season to give the Warriors a one-goal advantage early in the first half. Pesenti was also awarded the assist on the goal.

Set Breakdown:
  • The Blue Devils started the shooting in the fifth minute after a ball was launched towards the Warriors goalkeeper Francesco Bazzano who made the save. Pierrot blasted a shot in the 20th minute that was saved by the Central Connecticut keeper. Pesenti fired a cross into the box in the 33rd minute which found the foot of Pierrot, who scored it in the right corner of the net. The Warriors finished the half with a shot by Alessandro Negri that missed high. Merrimack took a one goal lead into halftime.
  • In the second half, Pesenti fired a shot on goal that was saved by the Blue Devils goalkeeper in the 47th minute. Central Connecticut found the back of the net with a chip shot over the Merrimack goalkeeper to tie the game at one. In the 69th minute Nehemie Lamtoukou launched a shot that missed just high. A couple minutes later, Negri had a shot on goal that was saved by the Blue Devils to keep the score at one. With five minutes to go, Central Connecticut had their best opportunity to win the game with a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced the Warriors way. At the end of regulation, the game remained tied and both teams headed to overtime.  
  • In the first overtime, the Blue Devils had a shot that was saved by Alvaro Rodriguez who was now in net for the Warriors. Osie, Negri, and Johan Feilscher all had shots for Merrimack, but nobody could find the back of the net. The teams needed another ten minutes to settle this one. Six minutes into the second overtime, Osei broke past the defense and fired a shot passed the Central Connecticut goalkeeper to win the game for the Warriors.
 
Notes and Notables:
  • Pierrot led the team in shots with seven on the night, three of them on goal.
  • The Warriors outshot the Blue Devils 23-14
  • Today's overtime victory was the first time that both team's needed extra time to decide a winner.
 
Up Next:
The Warriors host Boston College on Tuesday at Martone-Mejail Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
