Wester Nets Goal in Field Hockey’s Defeat to Lehigh

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Julie Wester tallied her second goal of the season on a penalty corner to spark the Merrimack College field hockey team's offense, but Lehigh prevailed in a 4-1 decision Sunday afternoon at Duane Stadium.

Wester's marker came in the second quarter to cut the Warriors' deficit in half. Lehigh went on to regain a two-goal lead before the halftime break, then tacked on another in the second half to seal the victory.

Rapid Recap
  • The teams traded chances in the opening 15 minutes as the sides combined for 12 shots and four on goal. Cate Buecker had a shot at goal just 16 seconds into the game and Wester had one stopped in the closing four minutes. Lehigh struck first with just 30 seconds to play to claim the advantage.
  • Lehigh pushed its lead to a pair eight minutes later, but the Warriors quickly fought back. With just under six minutes to play in the half, Jane Bonazzoli inserted a penalty corner to Wester, who wound up and cranked one home for the second tally of her young career. 
  • The Mountain Hawks pushed back with 1:59 to play in the second quarter to seize momentum before halftime.
  • Another tally from the visitors six minutes into the third quarter proved to be enough.
 
Notes and Figures
  • Brooke Bolduc made her second start of the weekend in the Warrior cage and made seven saves.  
  • Erica Spallone played the entire 60 minutes.
  • Wester led the team with four shots and a trio on goal. She's also now tied for the team lead in scoring with Katelyn Bennett at four points.
  • Abby Allen also registered a shot on goal.
  • The assist was the first of the campaign for Bonazzoli.

The Warriors return to conference play Friday evening when they battle Sacred Heart in Connecticut. Start time is set for 7:00 pm.
