Baseball Toppled by UMass in Game Two

ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College baseball team suffered an 11-4 loss in the second game of its three-game series with the University of Massachusetts on Saturday at Greater Lawrence Technical School. The Warriors record on the year fell to 2-5 while the Minutemen improved to 4-2.

  • Merrimack did score first on Saturday. A sequence of a throwing error followed by a fielder's choice followed by a pass ball left freshman Bryant Skurbe standing on third with one out. Graduate student Thomas Joyce promptly hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring the rookie to make it a 1-0 game
  • Graduate student Dan Amidon ran into trouble in the top of the third. After the first two runners of the inning reached, UMass pushed both baserunners across via a sacrifice fly and RBI groundout. With two outs, however, the visitors were able to score two runs via three hits and a walk to take a 4-1 lead
  • Freshman Tiernan Lynch relieved Amidon in the fourth, but only worked 1.2 innings as he allowed six runs. UMass led, 10-1, through five innings
  • Graduate student Nick Shumski hit a two-run double in the sixth inning, and classmate Joey Porricelli knocked in a run via a fielder's choice in the seventh to account for the rest of Merrimack's production

  • Joyce owned the team lead with two base hits, the only Warrior on the day with a multi-hit game
  • Sophomore Jack Collins and junior LT Pare were bright spots out of the Merrimack bullpen, throwing the final 4.1 innings on Saturday. The only allowed one unearned run to score
