Field Hockey Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Wagner

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College field hockey team had a back-and-forth battle with Wagner Thursday afternoon at Duane Stadium, but the Seahawks scored in the opening minute of overtime to claim a 2-1 win.

The Warriors tied the game early in the fourth quarter on Lauren Burke's first of her collegiate career on a penalty stroke. Merrimack then thought it had scored the eventual game-winner later in the fourth, but the goal was disallowed.

Rapid Recap
  • The field was open for opportunities in the opening half, but neither team was able to capitalize. The opponents combined for seven corners in the opening half hour, Wagner with five, but the goalkeepers were sharp to keep the score level. Abbie Ortyl made the start in the cage for Merrimack and turned aside four Wagner shots.
  • Wagner found the game's opening goal nine minutes into the third quarter off a rebound, but the Warriors didn't let the deficit last long.
  • After a long pass from midfield early in the fourth quarter, Colleen Ellis found herself alone in front of the net and was denied, but the Seahawks were called for a foul on the play and a penalty stroke was awarded. Burke walked up to take it and ripped a missile to the right side of the cage to even the score. 
  • Later in the quarter, Merrimack had a pair of corners to possibly claim the victory and it converted on one late, but the goal was disallowed to send the teams to overtime.
  • Under a minute into the extra session, Wagner claimed the victory on a tipped shot in front of Ortyl.
Notes and Figures
  • Merrimack outshot Wagner by a 13-12 margin and had a 9-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • Ellis had a game-high five shots on goal.
  • Burke, Riley Lambert and Juliane Ohmen also registered at least one shot on goal.
  • Erica Spallone, Bridget Shanahan, Burke and Ohmen all played the full 60 minutes.
