Men's Soccer Battles in Scoreless Draw

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Merrimack men's soccer, after a 110-minute double overtime battle on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson, worked a scoreless tie in New Jersey on Monday.

The Basics

The Summary
  • After both teams worked tactfully through the midfield, the Warriors got their first offensive roll late in the first half with a flurry in the 37th minute, Merrimack earned a free kick, with the initial shot blocked for a corner. In the next two minutes the Warriors worked three corners, getting services in the box pushed out by the defense. A shot by Alessandro Negri off of a free kick in the 42nd minute sailed high for the last offensive chance of the half.
  • In the first half, goalkeeper Georges El-Khoury worked three saves, facing seven shots to anchor the Warriors defensively.
  • The Warriors again peppered the net at the end of the second half, with a deep throw in from the outside of the 18-yard box leading to a shot by Frantz Pierrot on the ground that was saved in the 89th minute. Merrimack again rolled offensive pressure from corner kicks, with the first corner leading to a shot by Dylan Barreria over the net. The second corner service led to a Stefano Pesenti shot getting blocked by the defense, before the final corner was cleared out at the end of regulation.
  • Merrimack got the only shot on goal in both overtimes, with Frantz Pierrot again forcing a low save by FDU in the 99th minute.

  • Merrimack's defense held strong against eight corner kick attempts, including a pair in overtime, to keep Fairleigh Dickinson off the scoresheet.
  • The clean sheet is the first shutout for El-Khoury in goal for Merrimack and the first for the squad this year.
  • Merrimack now sits in third place in the Northeast Conference standings with eight points, sharing a 2-1-2 record with LIU.
