WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Merrimack College women's volleyball team played a doubleheader to open up the 2021 campaign as part of the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y. In the first contest, Big Ten foe Providence College finished with a 3-0 final, while Iona College followed suit earning a win in three sets.

Set Breakdown (Match 1):
- Providence hit .667 as a team in the opening set to grab a 1-0 advantage, with a 16-3 run to start the match putting the Friars ahead.
- Merrimack fought back, matching points with the Friars to a 16-16 tie on the heels of three attack errors by Providence and a service ace brought the teams level before the Friars went on a seven-point run to pull away with the second set.
- Junior Maegan Hladick went for three kills in the third set, bringing Merrimack back to an even eight points after the Warriors fell behind to open the set. Providence chipped away on shorter runs, with three straight kills to take a 15-10 lead before closing out on an attack error to take the match.
Set Breakdown (Match 2):
- Iona opened the second match of the day with a 6-2 lead before a five-point run led the Gaels to a .538 hitting for the set.
- The second set, Iona worked 17 kills on the board for their top of the day, with four straight kills giving the Gaels a 9-5 lead. Merrimack was back in for a 16-13 score on a kill by Taylor Vartanian, who had three on the day. A kill and two service aces pushed Iona over the edge to capture the set.
- Merrimack captured a 6-4 lead to open the third set before Iona rattled off seven points with three kills and three attack errors for a lead. A kill by Avery Brown before Vartanian captured a kill set the Warriors back in front 12-11. The Gaels sprinted for a 12 point run to capture the set and the match.
Notes & Notables
- Quinn Kellogg led the Warriors in aces with three and assists with eight against Iona, and led the group with nine digs against Providence
- Freshman Sydney Green posted nine kills in five sets between both games on the day
- Brooke Leestma, Lauryn Mattiucci and Hladick each earned seven digs in the Iona match
