La Salle Comes on Late, Knocks Off Field Hockey

Links: Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Merrimack College field hockey team held La Salle at bay in the opening 30 minutes Sunday afternoon at DeVincent Field, but the Explorers pushed through in the closing half hour to claim a 3-0 decision.

After just one shot on goal was fired in the first half, La Salle had some fortuitous bounces after the halftime break and took the lead just under eight minutes in. The Explorers sealed the win in the fourth with a pair of tallies and held off a myriad corner chances for the Warriors.

The Basics

Rapid Recap
  • The Warrior defense and play of Riley Brown was the story in the first half. Merrimack gave up six shots, but held the Explorers to just one shot on goal and Brown was up to the task on it to keep the teams deadlocked.
  • The sides played evenly for the first seven minutes of the third quarter, then La Salle snagged momentum when it cashed in on a penalty corner.
  • Merrimack came back with a vengeance after the opening goal and had three consecutive penalty corners in the quarter's final seven minutes, but the visitors narrowly missed out on an equalizer.
  • La Salle pushed the lead to two 1:07 in the fourth quarter, then looked the close out the game a couple minutes later, but Brown had other plans. The senior netminder took on Sofia Pla in a penalty stroke and shut her down with a great stop.
  • The Warriors continued to push after the save, but could not find the back of the net and an Explorer tally in the final minute capped the scoring.

Notes and Figures
  • Brown made five saves on the afternoon to make it nine on the weekend in Philadelphia.
  • Anne-Sophie Hogenboom registered a shot for the second consecutive game and had the team's lone shot on goal. Riley Lambert also had a shot in the effort.
