Buecker, Allen Score First Career Goals in Defeat at Holy Cross

Links: Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Cate Buecker and Abby Allen had milestone markers Tuesday night for the Merrimack College field hockey team at Hart Turf Field, as both players netted their first collegiate goals in a 5-2 setback to Holy Cross.

Both Warrior goals came in the second half, as the visitors mounted a strong comeback effort that ultimately fell just short after Holy Cross tacked on a couple late goals to pull away on the rain-soaked surface. The offensive explosion marked the best scoring output for the season for Merrimack in its first game under interim head coach, Hannah Richard.

The Basics
Score: Holy Cross 5, Merrimack 2

Rapid Recap
  • Riley Brown came up clutch for Merrimack in the game's opening 15 minutes. She kicked out all three shots that came her way, as Holy Cross had a 5-2 edge in shots through 15 minutes.
  • The Crusaders pushed through just over a minute into the second to take the 1-0 lead, but Brown and the Warrior defense clamped down after that to keep it a one-goal deficit at the halftime break.
  • Merrimack continued to create chances into the second half, but Holy Cross found the game's second goal with under three minutes to play in the third quarter. It was a two-goal deficit that did not last long thanks to Buecker.
  • The sophomore received a pass from Juliane Ohmen after the senior co-captain cut her way into the attacking end. Buecker quickly fired the shot towards goal and just snuck it inside the far pipe to cut the margin in half a minute and a half after the Crusaders' second goal.
  • Holy Cross looked to put the game away again six minutes into the fourth quarter on another tally, but a swift response brought the lead to one yet again.
  • Allen netted her first career goal in impressive style after she took a long feed from past the half field line. She beat a defender inside, then uncorked a backhanded shot that soared past the Crusader goalkeeper.
  • Another Holy Cross marker with under five minutes to play proved to be too much, as it added another with 2:50 to play to close the scoring.
Notes and Figures
  • Allen was a force offensively with a career-high six shots in the game.
  • Merrimack's 13 shots marked a season-high.
  • Brown ended her night in the cage with 11 stops.
  • Ohmen's assist marked her first point of the season and 22nd of her career.
